Abstract

In order to improve the strength, elongation and dye affinity, while diminishing the lustre of artificial silk fabrics, the latter are given an all-over treatment with sulphocyanide solution of 15-25 DEG Be, and are then washed. Viscose, cuprammonia and nitrocellulose silks respond best to the treatment; with cellulose acetate silks the results are not so permanent. Any soluble sulphocyanide may be used, although calcium sulphocyanide is preferred. The treatment with the sulphocyanide solution may be carried out with or without tension, and in the cold. In examples, a temperature of 20 DEG C. is employed, the solution being applied by padding or sucking; after treatment, the materials are washed with lukewarm water. The treatment may be applied before or after dyeing, and in the absence of a dyestuff. Specifications 165,164, 215,860, 260,650, 264,529, and 281,352, [all in Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) includes other concentrations of the sulphocyanide solution. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
