[Class 100 (iv).] Index type-wheel machines.-A type-wheel is geared to a setting-device comprising two positivelyconnected index-members which are operated by the right and left hands and are set with reference to an index-plate having the characters so arranged that the index-members register with only one character at a time. In the machine shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, a frame 25, 26, 27, mounted to slide on rods 28, 29, supports bell cranks 9, 10 having keys 7, 8 for receiving a finger of the left and right hands respectively. The keys are connected to notched index-members 4, 5 arranged over an index-plate 1, the characters 2 being so arranged that only one notch at a time registers with a charatcer. The keys engage abutments 13, 14 on a bail 15 suspended from the frame 25, 26, 27 and connected to arms 18, 19 carrying a rack 20 which engages a pinion 3 on the shaft 31 of the type-drum 21. The shaft is mounted on a plate 22 which is pivoted on a vertical axis 23 and is provided with a pin 24 entering a grooved member 25 on the rack. Lateral movement of the keys rotates the type-drum for type-selection, and depression of one of the keys rocks the typedrum for impression, an aligning-rack 34 preventing simultaneous depression of both keys. A pivoted plate 36 in connection with letter-spacing mechanism abuts on a pin 38 on the plate 22. In an alternative arrangement, each index-member has a slot for receiving one of the fingers, and a depressible bar for rocking the type-drum is arranged below the slots and is operated by the fingers. The framework of the machine may be covered by sheets of galalith, celluloid, or the like. Paper-supports; feed-roller detents.-The machine may be provided with a cylindrical type-drum and a platen roller or, preferably, with a polygonal type-drum, and a platen bar 59, Fig. 4, which is associated with guides 51, 52 and feed-rollers 53, 54 for the paper. The feed-roller 53 may be provided with a knob 55 having recesses for engaging a detent consisting of a spring-pressed ball.
