Abstract

343,714. Typewriters. HOLZER, R. VON, 54, Bornheimerlandstrasse, Frankforton-Main, Germany. Jan. 31, 1930, No. 3432. Convention date, Jan. 31, 1929. [Class 100 (iv).] Index type-wheel machines ; type-carriages ; caseshift mechanism ; hammer-impression arrangements.-In machines comprising a type-wheel mounted on a letter-spacing carriage and movable for character selection by means of a stylus, the selecting-means includes a stylus-engaging member mounted for three-dimensional movement. The selecting-means may include also an index plate which has notches for limiting the movements of the stylus, and is movable to operate a hammer and letter-spacing mechanism. The stylus may be provided with a case-shift device. In the machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2, type-arms 3, 4 carrying upper case and lower case types 6, 7 are pivoted on a disc 2 revoluable on a pin 1 carried by a slide 39 having case-shift movement on a carriage 40. To render visible the writing, the machine has an opening 51 near the printing point 8, and typearms are omitted from part of the disc 2. The arms 4 are 'bent to bring the types 7, 6 into alignment. A floating plate 12, having a cupped pin 11 for receiving the stylus 9, is connected to the ends of a cord 15 which is wound on the hub 18 of the disc 2 and passes over rollers 16, 17, 20. The cord has a spring section 19. The plate 12 is arranged over a plate 30 secured to a rock-shaft 31 which is connected to a bell crank 34 carrying the roller 20. An index plate 22 having notches for engaging the pin 11 is pivoted on a stud 21 and has fingers 23, 26 engaging a lever 24 connected to a link 27 which is formed with teeth engaging a pinion 28 connected to a hammer 29. Lateral movement of the stylus carries the pin 11 into one of the notches in the index plate and rotates the disc 2 for selection of alternate lower case types, selection of the other lower case types being effected by depression as well as lateral movement of the stylus. Depression of the stylus causes the plate 12 to rock the plate 30 into contact with a stop 32, and the roller 20 is moved forwards, the disc 2 being thereby turned through an arc equal to that between adjacent types. For selection of upper case types, the stylus is moved laterally and, if necessary, depressed, and the slide 39 is shifted by depressing a button 35 which is mounted in the stylus and is connected by a Bowden wire 37 to the slide. Alternatively, the stop 32 may be replaced by an adjustable stop for permitting further depression of the plate 30 for case shift. After the pin 11 has engaged a notch in the index plate, the movement of the stylus towards the front or rear is forcibly continued to rock the index plate and thereby cause the hammer to swing over and strike a projection 52 on the selected type-arm. Aligning for impression.-The hammer 29, Fig. 1, is formed with a cup 50 which co-operates with the projections 52, Fig. 2, to align the types. Letter-spacing mechanism.-An anchor 42, Fig. 1, on the type-carriage 40 co-operates with a stationary rack 43 and is connected by a link 41 to the lever 24, the anchor permitting letter-spacing of the type-carriage after a character has been typed. On movement of the pin 11 into a notch 47 in the index plate 22, the plate 12 rocks a lever 44 connected to the anchor, and spacing is effected without typing.
