Abstract

361,037. Uniting fibres by adhesive to form twistless yarn. ALLEN, W. R., Hill End, Holcombe, near Bury. Sept. 12, 1930, No. 27214. [Classes 120 (ii) and 120 (iii).] A twistless yarn is formed from twistless discontinuous fibres such as cotton, worsted, woollen, cut artificial silk, jute, &c. by uniting the fibres by an adhesive by subjecting them whilst in the wet state due to the adhesive to a process comprising pressing or rolling the fibres together. The fibrous material 3 passes through drawing rollers 4 and delivery rollers 5 to a travelling band 6 across a gap to a further travelling band 7 moistened by a roller 9 partly immersed in a trough 10 of liquid adhesive, the excess adhesive being removed from the band 7 by a rubber coated or like wiper 11. The adhesive may comprise 9 ozs. of glue per gallon of hot water, or ordinary size as for a slashing machine may be used. Whilst on the band 7 the fibres are contacted together by a roller 12 which is reciprocated axially by an eccentric. The fibrous strand then passes beneath a grooved pulley 19, it is dried by air or with the aid of a tube 21 supplied with hot fluid, and is wound on a cheese &c. 20, or on a reel. In various modifications, the drawing rollers 4 may be omitted, as may also one of the travelling bands ; the adhesive may be applied after the strand has left the band or bands, by a roller &c. in a trough; the cheese may be directly above the reciprocating roller 12, or the roller 12 dispensed with, the cheese being directly above the band 7 which is reciprocated in a manner similar to that for the roller 12. According to the Provisional Specification a small laterally reciprocated band is used in place of the roller 12, and the strand is supported by a wire gauze or other perforated travelling band within or over a steam-heated drying chamber.
