Abstract
Cellulose nitrate-carboxylates are produced by reacting on a fatty acid, if desired with addition of its anhydride, in the presence of a cellulose nitrate containing at least two nitrate groups to the molecule, with a substance which transforms the fatty acid into its acid chloride. Examples of such substances are thionyl chloride, sulphuryl chloride, phosphorus oxychloride, phosphorus trichloride or pentachloride, and phosgene. The reaction, which is preferably carried out in the presence of a small quantity of water, proceeds with the partial elimination of the nitrate groups. In an example, collodion cotton containing 11,1 per cent of nitrogen is dissolved in glacial acetic acid, and thionyl chloride is added. The product is separated in flakes by pouring into water and contains 5,2 per cent of nitrogen. According to a further example in which the original structure of the fibre is retained, collodion cotton having a 20 per cent moisture content is introduced into a solution in benzene of acetic anhydride and acetic acid, to which has been added thionyl chloride and sulphuryl chloride. The products may be converted into artificial threads, films and the like.
