Abstract

In the production of potassium nitrate from potassium chloride and ammonium nitrate in a cyclic process a solution saturated at say 50-70 DEG C. with potassium carnallite, ammonium carnallite, potassium nitrate and potassium chloride has added thereto the requisite quantity of potassium chloride and water to obtain on cooling say to 20 DEG C. a precipitate of pure potassium nitrate, which is separated. To the mother liquor is then added ammonium nitrate, potassium carnallite and a solution of magnesium chloride or crystals thereof so that on evaporating the resulting solution to remove added water a quantity of ammonium carnallite corresponding to the amount of potassium nitrate obtained is precipitated, and a saturated mother liquor results ready for re-use. In the second step of the process anhydrous magnesium chloride recovered from ammonium carnallite may replace the solution or crystals used, whereby the amount of evaporation necessary is reduced. The ammonium carnallite may be treated by known methods to form, for re-use in the process, both magnesium chloride and ammonium nitrate.
