360,031. Winding wire. ELECTRICAL RESEARCH PRODUCTS, Inc., 195, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Larsen, E. W. ; 2048, Cleveland Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) July 31, 1930, No. 23161. Convention date, Aug. 10, 1929. [Class 120 (ii).] Apparatus for winding wire received from a wire-drawing machine comprises a bobbin 23 driven by an induction motor operating at reduced voltage such that the torque of the motor increases in direct proportion as the diameter of the wound mass of wire increases, the arrangement maintaining the tension constant with reducing rotational speed during winding. A 440 volt polyphase induction motor 10 has a rope drive 20 to a pulley 16 secured to a support 21 for the bobbin 23 which is held between a flange 22 and a collar 24, pins 25 of which engage bayonet slots 26 in the support 21 the assembly rotating on an arbor 14. On starting, leads 40 are connected to a 440 volt A.C. source, a switch 31 being in the position shown and giving direct connection to the motor whilst the bobbin &c. is accelerated. A slow-acting relay 33 switches in a solenoid 32 which attracts the switch &c. 31 downward against the tension of a spring 43; thus after a predetermined interval the motor 10 is automatically connected to a lower voltage from a transformer 30 of ratio adjustable according to the gauge of wire being wound.
