Abstract
Textile materials are treated with aqueous solutions of polyhydric alcohol-polybasic acid condensation products, such as the ammonium and alkali compounds of glycerol-phthalic anhydride resins described in Specifications 356,738 and 358,095, and the resin is then fixed on the material by drying or treatment with acid, or by treatment with metal salts as described in Specification 357,125. The treatment with the aqueous resin solution may be effected in a mangling machine, by a dipping process, by surface coating, or locally by printing; other finishes such as starch, casein, &c., or dyestuffs, pigments, fillers, &c., may be present. According to examples: (1) Black cotton cloth is immersed in a solution of the product described in example 4 of Specification 356,738, wrung and dried; the product has a linen handle and may be Schreiner finished. (2) Cotton is given a woollen handle by treatment with a solution of the product described in example 7 of Specification 356,738, followed by drying. (3) A condensation product prepared from glycerol, phthalic anhydride, and stearic acid, is dissolved in aqueous ammonia, cotton cloth is immersed in the solution, followed by treatment with aluminium sulphate solution and drying; the product has high resistance to water. (4) A pile fabric (velvet, carpet, &c.) is stiffened by coating the back with a mixed solution of the products described in examples 4 and 5 of Specification 356,738, followed by drying. (5) A bookbinding cloth is obtained by coating cotton fabric one or more times with a mixture of the solution referred to in example 4 with china clay and pigment, e.g. monopile Red C drying, and finally coating with the solution containing the filler or pigment, drying, and calendering. (6) Viscose or acetate silk material is delustred by treatment as described in example 4.
