Abstract

Artificial silk cakes are treated after the first drying with a dressing that sticks the capillary threads in the thread strand, the dressing consisting of emulsions of drying oils or of solutions of drying oils in organic liquids. The treatment may be carried out while the cake is supported uniformly on the entire length of the periphery, and for this purpose it may be wrapped in permeable fabrics or net-like coverings. The cakes may be supported during the treatment, from the inside by reel-like, or bobbin-like devices. The cakes may be treated with the sizing solution, by immersion or spraying, or they may be assembled coaxially in small centrifuges, and the excess of the solution may be removed by centrifuging. The oxidation of the drying oil on the dressed threads, after removal of the solvent may be assisted by ventilation, ozone treatment or by the previous addition of siccatives to the drying oils. The cakes so treated may be directly supplied to textile machines such as Jacquard machines, stocking frames, circular looms, hosiery machines, warping machines, and doubling machines. The dressing liquid may be a solution or emulsion of a drying oil such as linseed, hempseed, or wood oil. Alkylated naphthol derivatives may be employed as emulsifiers for making aqueous emulsions of the oils. Benzine, carbon tetrachloride, and other halogenated hydrocarbons may be employed as solvents. Beeswax, Japan wax, ozokerite, resins, tallow, stearin, paraffin, glycerin, or soap may be incorporated in the dressing liquid. Specification 265,996, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is referred to.ALSO:Artificial silk cakes are treated with a dressing liquid containing a solution or emulsion of a drying oil.
