Abstract

359,632. Heating lubricating oil. CRAVEN, F. DE T., 44, West 75th Street, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 30, 1930, No. 25997. [Class 12 (iii).] The lubricating oil of an internal-combustion engine is warmed, starting thus being facilitated, by circulating heated water through or around the sump or other part of the lubricating system; in a water-cooled engine, Fig. 1, the cooling water itself may be used as the heating medium. Water from the cooling jacket 5 is circulated through a pipe 4, passing through the sump 6 by an electric heater 7, comprising heating unit 29, Fig. 3, surrounded by a perforated tube and controlled by a thermal switch 11. In an air-cooled engine the tube 4 leads from a water tank containing the heater 7. The Provisional Specification states that the electric heater may be located in the lubricating oil itself.
