Abstract

359,155. Indirectly heated steam boilers. AKTIEBOLAGET GOTAVERKEN and JOHANSSON, J. E., Gothenburg, Sweden. Sept. 22, 1930, No. 28314. [Class 123 (ii).] Return-tube boilers having two or more flue tubes adapted to be heated alternatively by gaseous or liquid fuel and internal-combustion engine exhaust have means for connecting the engine exhaust pipes with one only of the flue tubes and dampers or the like are preferably arranged to cause the exhaust gases to pass successively through one flue tube with its set of smoke tubes after the other. One of the flues of each of two return-tube boilers is connected to a valve box 3 whereby either may receive exhaust gases from internalcombustion engines through conduits 1, 1<1> ; or these conduits may be connected to atmosphere through silencers 4, 4<1>. Each of the boiler flues has a burner for direct firing and in the arrangement shown the right-hand boiler is so heated, combustion products passing from the flues 71, 11<1> to the return-tubes 9<1>, 10<1> and thence to the chimney past a damper 15. Flue 7 of the lefthand boiler receives the exhaust gases which pass successively through tubes 9, 10, and flue 11 to a trunk 13 and past a damper 14 to the chimney. Each flue has a casing 18 with a chamber 20 having openings 21, 22 for introducing the burner which is mounted in a casing hinged to the outside of the casing 18. When the burner is not in use covers 23, 24 close the openings 21, 22, and these are pivotally mounted about a second hinge so as to be swung outwardly when the burner is to be inserted. The inner cover may be displaceable on a guide 29 to fit within the outer cover on swinging over a clamp 30. In a modification a boiler has three flues with valved pipes at the front connecting the first and second sets of return tubes with the second and third flues respectively to provide a series flow for the exhaust gases.
