[Class 103 (i).] Upon failure of the current in an electromagnetically operated brake, the operating lever is coupled to an alternative brake such as a mechanically operated brake. As shown in Fig. 1, the pedal a which actuates the controller b of an electromagnetically operated brake has connected to it a slotted link in which is disposed a pin g on the lever d of a mechanically operated brake. The link c carries a pawl f which engages the pin g so that the pedal operates the lever d if a magnet h in the electric brake circuit is not energized when the pedal is moved. In another construction, the pedal a carries the pin g and the slotted part is carried by a lever which is co-axial with the pedal. Fig. 3 shows a further form in which the pedal a freely mounted on the shaft j of the mechanical brake, has projections k between which are projections m on a collar secured to the shaft. A pawl f on the pedal fills the gap between the projections m, k if the magnet h is de-energized and so couples the pedal to the shaft. The mechanical operating mechanism may actuate the same brake shoes as the electric control or it may actuate other shoes acting on the same or different brake drums.
