Abstract
In the production of ammonium salts by the hydrolysis of thiocyanic acid or its salts by means of dilute acids or mixtures thereof, the reaction is carried out with the addition of a salt which is not capable of decomposition by the acid present under the conditions of the reaction. The attack of the liquors on the metallic apparatus employed is thereby reduced. Ammonium thiocyanate may be hydrolysed by sulphuric acid, salts such as ammonium sulphate or sodium sulphate being added. If phosphoric acid is employed such as ammonium phosphate or sodium chloride may be used. It is preferable to construct the apparatus employed, wholly or in part, of molybdenum steel or to line the apparatus with this material. According to an example ammonium thiocyanate is heated with sulphuric acid and ammonium sulphate liquor for several hours at 150-180 DEG C. in an autoclave consisting of chromium nickel steel containing molybdenum. Ammonium sulphate is produced.
