Abstract

357,586. Compression ignition oil engines. RICARDO, H. R., 21, Suffolk Street, Pall Mall, London. June 25, 1930, No. 19320. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (iii).] In a liquid fuel injection compression ignition engine in which the air charge rotates about the axis of the combustion chamber, a metallic liner C of heat-resisting material is inserted in the combustion chamber B<1> to minimize heat transference from the outer layers of the whirling air charge to the wall of the combustion chamber. The liner is split longitudinally at C<1>, and has flanges C<2> which bear against the walls of the chamber to form an air gap C<3>. It is made of heat-resisting steel. The upper end of the combustion chamber is closed by a second liner D, which is cut away at D<4> to accommodate fuel sprayers B<4>. An air gap D<3> is provided behind the liner D. In a modification the liner is held in position by a clip and the combustion chamber is formed in the piston.
