Abstract
A finely divided and apparently amorphous form of anhydrous calcium sulphate is obtained by treating the anhydrous salt, obtained, for instance, by heating the hydrated form at or below 200 DEG C., with sulphuric acid at a suitable strength, but insufficient to cause the formation of calcium bisulphate. For example, the hot dehydrated compound may be mixed with sulphuric acid of 1,2 specific gravity at 100 DEG C., in quantity sufficient to provide 4-5 grams SO3 to each 100 grams anhydrous calcium sulphate. This temperature is maintained until conversion is complete, when the product is washed and dried, or dried and calcined. Alternatively, the dehydrated and cooled calcium sulphate may be moistened with cold sulphuric acid of 1,4-1,7 specific gravity and the mass, after conversion, is washed and dried, or dried and calcined. According to the Provisional Specification, sulphuric acid in any of its forms, or acid sulphates such as titanium sulphate, or phosphoric acid may be used as the disintegrating agent. Specification 319,228, [Class 1 (iii), Oxides &c. Metallic], is referred to.
