Abstract
303,808. I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges. Jan. 9, 1928, [Convention date]. Sulphur trioxide. - The dehydration and decomposition of iron sulphates is effected in the presence of a solid decomposition product obtained by heating ferric sulphate, preferably ferric oxide. A small amount of an alkali or alkaline earth oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate may also be present. Oxidation may precede or be effected simultaneously with the drying and decomposition, and a catalyst for the gaseous decomposition products, for instance ferric oxide when added, may be present to obtain complete recovery of sulphuric acid as sulphur trioxide. In examples 10-30 per cent of ferric oxide obtained by heating ferric sulphate is added, drying is effected at 300-400‹ C. in a revolving furnace and decomposition at 750-850‹ C. in a calcining furnace.
