355,342. Surface condensers. NOTT, A. J., 273, St. Marks Place, Staten Island, New York, U.S.A. May 23, 1930, No. 15920. [Class 64 (iii).] In a surface condenser consisting of a drum 10, fixed and axially moving tube sheets 11, 14, in which the end of the cooling tube 19 are sealed, and a packing between the sheet 14 and the drum, a lantern gland 27 with a single or double web is interposed between the packing rings of the stuffing- box in order to receive and distribute water in the packing under a pressure exceeding that of the circulating cooling water. The water may be obtained through a branch 29 from the condensate outflow pipe 28.
