Abstract

354,135. Knitting. HEMPHILL CO., Central Falls, Rhode Island, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Lawson, R. H. ; Pawtucket, Rhode Island, U.S.A.) Nov. 19, 1930, No. 34818. Convent.on date, Dec. 31, 1929. [Class 74 (ii).] The' sinkers are moved upwards during stitch drawing and to prevent loops in process of formation from being rubbed by more completely formed loops, two or more adjacent sinkers are successively maintained at substantially the stitch-drawing level. The invention is described as applied to a multfeed machine with rotating needle cylinder. The sinker head 23 is fastened to a ring 40 having internal teeth 41 to mesh with the cylinder tricks. After retraction of each sinker 21 by the cam 19, a cam 45 forming part of a plate 46 carried by the cylinder enters within each throat 21a in turn and thereafter the cam 47 successively raises each sinker as the corresponding needles are depressed by the stitch cam. By thus dividing the operation of draw ng loops between the sinkers and needles, the sinker taking the chief part, the angle of the draw cam can be made less steep, with consequent gain in speed of working. A modified form of sinker is provided with an incline which when the sinker is pushed forward engages a cam and is raised thereby. The sinkers are guided in their radial movements by removable walls which take the place of the usual stitch ring. The draw of the stitch cams may be readily adjusted by hand at each feed.
