Circular machines ; needles. - Seamless stockings and socks are produced in a circular machine having latch needles with their butts formed on resilient arms which are operated by a segmental cam and levers to put the butts out of action without altering the positions of the needles in the machine. The levers 14 which act on the resilient arms of the needles to move their butts 9 out of the path of the needle-operating cams 10 rotate with the needle cylinder and are operated by the segmental cam 20. This cam is shown in inoperative position and may be raised into operative position by rods 18, and to enable more needles to be thrown out of action gradually as the heel is knitted adjustable cam extensions are provided. These cam extensions carry star-wheels 27, 28 which as the needle cylinder reciprocates are operated by pawls 31, 32 to cause, their pinions to travel step by step along the toothed ring 17. When all except a few needles have been put out of action two pawls 38, 39 are brought into action to operate the star-wheels 27, 28 so as to retract the cam extensions step by step.
