[Class 25.] To reduce the loss of heat of flue gases during the passage of a chimney, there is provided between a flue lining of earthenware, fireclay, brickwork, concrete, or the like and an outer casing, an elastic insulating material such as slag wool, kieselguhr, magnesia, asbestos wool, glass wool or the like in rigid connection with the chimney. In a house chimney, Fig. 1, the flue lining 1 is built up of socket-jointed pipes within a channel of the masonry work 2 and is supported on concrete corbelling 3 or by holders or brackets built into the masonry, elastic packing material being fitted round the pipe at the points of support. A ring 6 of asbestos cord, slag wool or the like is inserted in each pipe socket before the next length of pipe is set up. To attach the insulation 4 to the flue lining, a wire, jute or like fabric is spread out, covered with a layer of insulation and then wrapped round the pipe member and further secured by binding with cord. Cavities left between the insulated lining and the brickwork after the assembly of the pipe members are filled with loose insulating material. In a collective flue the internal diameter of the lining is increased towards the outlet corresponding to the increase of the volume of waste gases. In a modification as applied to a free-standing chimney, Fig. 9, the insulation 10 is attached in sections by means of spikes to the outer casing 11 of concrete or to the flue lining 12 of brickwork. In the latter case the outer casing may also be plastered with insulation 13. A clearance for expansion is provided in each case. In a further modification, Fig. 10, the outer casing consists of thin cambered plates 16 of sheet metal, asbestos cement or the like bent over at their ends 17 and anchored in the flue lining or hung on corbels 18 integral with the lining.
