Abstract

353,434. Valve stoppers for bottles. HOPKINS, H. N., 211, Upper Thames Street, London. April 22, 1930, No. 12355. [Classes 21 and 125 (iii).] Relates to combined stoppers and valves for bottles &c. of the type having an air vent and draw-off passage which are simultaneously opened or closed by a manually operated valve. According to the invention the stopper comprises a solid moulded body 1 the upper part of which is divided from the lower part by a projection 12 so that the lower part can be employed as a plug. A slidable valve rod 3 passes through a central bore 2 and has a sleeve-like head 6 which surrounds a spring 8. An air vent passage 11 and a fluid delivery passage 10 extend lengthwise of the body and are simultaneously opened and closed by valve members 4. The spring 8 bears on a rubber seating washer 9 and a rubber sleeve 13 is provided on the plug part of the body. The passages 10, 11 open on opposite sides of the body, the liquid passage 10 at a higher part than the vent. In a modification both passages enter an internal chamber in the stopper. The valve member may comprise a ground glass disc, and the valve rod may be non-rotatable. Resilient packing 15 may be used with the valves; and a safety guard or bail may be fitted to prevent accidental operation of the head 6.
