Abstract

345,367. Load-handling appliances; jib cranes; endless-track vehicles. CORFIELD, A. H., 1, Stores Depot, Royal Air Force, Kidbrooke, London, and SUTTON, G. E. B., Cie. Crane, Rue de Verdun, La Courneuve, Paris. Jan. 2, 1930, No. 135. [Classes 78 (iii) and 78 (iv).] A lifting-appliance comprises a lever fulcrummed on a vehicle chassis, a turntable on the free end of the lever, a load carrier on the turntable and means for maintaining the turntable horizontal. As used for lifting bombs into position under aeroplanes, the chassis 1 having wheels or endless tracks 26 has the lifting lever 37 pivoted thereto at its rear end 42, its front end being fitted with a socket 39 mounted on a pivot 38 and provided with a parallel motion linkage 41. A hydraulic operating ram 44, driven by a pump, not shown, is pivoted to the lever near its rear end. A pedestal 47, Fig. 6, fits into the socket 39 and carries a slide 48 diametrically adjustable by means of screw gearing 52. The slide has an -uprising boss 58 centering a turntable 59 having lateral brackets 61 carrying a spindle 62 on which is mounted a crutch frame 63 for supporting the bomb. The crutch frame is normally kept in position by springs 65 and is also fitted with a dash-pot. A lifting arm 80 is mounted on the lifting lever and carries a pulley 79 at its free end over which a hoisting rope 76 passes from a worm-gearing operated winch 82 on the chassis to a hook 77 for attachment to the bomb so that it can be lifted from the ground into the crutch frame. When hoisting the bomb a stop 83 on the rope abuts against a plate 84 on the lifting arm and the arm is then luffed until the bomb is vertically over the crutch frame, a slotted arm 86 engaging a pin on the lifting arm controlling the movement of the lifting arm. The endless tracks 26, Figs. 8 and 11, have central V-shaped ribs 27 engaging grooves in the jockey pulleys 13 and main pulley 7, the pulleys being mounted on beams 10 having a slide connection 15 with guideways 9 in brackets 4 pivotally mounted on the chassis and connected to steering mechanism 30 and a handle 30<*>. The jockey pulley spindles engage slots 19 in the beams and are fitted with screw adjusting devices 20.
