Abstract
Thymol, its isomers and homologues are prepared by first heating the condensation products of m- or p-cresol with aliphatic ketones, see Specification 273,684, [Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], to a temperature of about 300 DEG C. in a stream of hydrogen and then passing the decomposition products still admixed with hydrogen over an hydrogenating catalyst at a temperature of about 200 DEG C. to effect hydrogenation of the alkylene-phenols present. Examples are given of the preparation of thymol from the condensation product of m-cresol and acetone, and of 4-methyl-6-isopropylphenol from the condensation product of p-cresol and acetone, using nickel on pumice as the catalyst.
