Abstract
A composition, which may be readily mixed with a substantially equal quantity of water to form bitumen or tar emulsions, comprises bituminous materials or tar, a higher fatty or resin acid or a mixture thereof, an alkali silicate, and a proportion of water substantially less than 9 per cent, the proportion of silicate being such that, after saponification of the fatty or resin acid, the molecular proportions of alkali and silica remaining in the composition are 1 : 3-5. The acid employed is preferably "liquid rosin," derived from sulphite cellulose lye the proportion being of the order of 2 per cent of the bituminous material. The silicate used may be commercial water-glass, the molecular proportions of sodium oxide and silica in which are 1 : 2. In addition sodium silicate (Na2O:SiO2 1 : 4) and caustic alkalies or ammonia may be used. Sodium silicate may be replaced by potassium silicate. Numerous examples are given in the Specifications.
