[Class 35.] Alternating-current induction machines; armatures and field magnets, short-circuited screens on poles of.-An induction motor, particularly for single-phase use, has shaded and unshaded pole sections arranged alternately and two windings which are selectively energized to produce rotation in either direction as desired. The shaded sections have smaller pole-face areas and the rotor may be of the squirrel-cage type. In the form shown, each coil of the winding 21 embraces an unshaded pole section 18 and the adjacent shaded pole section 17 in a clockwise direction from the unshaded section, and each coil of the winding 22 embraces an unshaded pole section 18 and the adjacent shaded section 17 in an anticlockwise direction from the unshaded section. The component coils of each winding are connected in series and single phase current is fed into either of the windings. The shading of the pole sections 17 is effected by discs or bands 20 of copper or the like.
