Abstract

340,349. Swing bridges. DORMAN LONG & CO., Ltd. and PAIN, J. F., 55, Broad way, Westminster. Oct. 10, 1929, No. 30772. [Class 20 (i).] A balanced bilateral bridge is supported hydraulically during the time it is moved from its normal to open position and vice versa and has means to prevent its tilting. The bridge is carried by a bearing plate on the cylinder A of a hydraulic ram the piston B of which is fixed to a pedestal F to form the pivot about which the bridge swings. The bridge is balanced by rollers H running on a flange I at the base of the pedestal. The bridge may be raised by one or more hydraulic jacks so disposed that it is balanced and may then be swung about a central pivot, or it may be raised by any mechanical means and supported upon a hydraulic pivot about which it rotates. The bridge is rotated through gearing D<1>, D<2>, D<5> and a fixed segmental rack E from a shaft J carried by the bridge, the shaft of the pinion D<1> being automatically engaged with and disengaged from the shaft J as the bridge is raised and lowered.
