Abstract
339,625. Sombrun, M. Aug. 7, 1929. Springs, arrangement of; lateral movement, preventing.-In vehicle suspension-systems with independently mounted wheels, the ends of the axle are connected by longitudinal pivots to the wheel-carrying members which are further controlled in position by transverse pivoted link connections to the frame, the vehicle being provided with the usual laminated supporting springs. In the construction shown applied to the front wheels of a vehicle in Fig. 5, the axle supports the frame 10 through springs 2 and its ends are pivoted at 3 to the wheel-carrying members 4 which are connected at their upper ends by hollow links 7 to the frame 10. The supports 4 also serve as forks to which the stub axles 5 of the wheels are pivoted for steering. A pin 17 and slots 16 limit the relative angular movement of the axle 7 and the wheel-carrying members 4. The inner end of the hollow pivoted link 7 has a cylindrical connection with the frame 10. Transverse movement of the axle may be prevented by a roller fixed to the axle and working in a vertical slot in a bracket depending from the frame. Transverse or oblique springs may be arranged between the axle and the frame. The hollow link 7 may be replaced by simple links. Spring links 170 may be employed as shown in Fig. 20 to connect the frame and the upper ends of the wheel mountings, which may also be provided with depending arms connected by a transverse rod. Rubber springs may be employed in the elastic link. Various other modifications of the link are shown, including the crossed links 176, 177 of Fig. 22 and the reversed link 212 of Fig. 28, the outer end of which is pivoted to a bracket extending outwards from the frame. In the construction shown in Fig. 9 the axle support is connected to the end of the axle casing by a cylindrical joint which encloses a universal driving joint connecting the driving axle 46 to the wheel axle 50. The axle 63 in the construction shown in Fig. 12, is pivoted to the wheel-carrying member 64 to a point below the level of the wheel axis and the wheel is driven through a transverse telescopic shaft 72.
