Abstract

339,082. Ellison, E. J. Dec. 30, 1929, Combined with illuminating-appliances. - In umbrellas, walking-sticks, and the like, having an electric lamp and its equipment disposed within a detachable handle, the parts are so constructed and arranged that the handle can be recharged with cells without disconnection from the main stem, the wire connection between the switch and a pole of that battery remote from the lamp being let into the wall of a hollow part of the handle. As shown, the lighting equipment is arranged within the hollowed vertical portion of a handle A. A screw cap P forces a reflector C, bulb D, and batteries B on to a spring W, which latter is in connection with a wire L, let into the wall of the handle and leading to a switch M which closes the circuit by contact with the bulb. Where the batteries are arranged in the curved portion of the handle, its outer end is closed by a cap to facilitate removal of the curved cells. On the other hand, when the cells are arranged in the vertical or horizontal straight portion of a handle, they are replaced by removal of the cap P.
