[Class 39 (ii)] In a torch provided with a barrel 1 made of a non-conducting elastomer, the external circuit of the battery runs through a metal strip 18 the upper part of which is disposed on the outside of the barrel, with the upper end held between the barrel and the sliding contact tongue 19 of a switch 21. The lower end of the strip 18 is connected to a contact spring 15 located between the bottom of the barrel and the base of the adjacent cell 13. The external portion of the strip 18 is seated within a longitudinal groove 16 on the barrel and retained therein by the contact tongue 19 which is retained in the groove by a metal strap 20 riveted on either side thereof, the tongue 19 being movable into or out of contact with a metal ring 7 countersunk into the removable head 2 of the torch. The head 2 which is wider than the barrel 1, has a reduced lower portion adapted to be screwed into the top of the barrel, and the upper portion is provided with a cavity to receive a bulb socket 4 which is secured in position by a screw 11 extending to the lower side of the head to engage a terminal nut 10, providing a central contact to engage, the positive pole 14 of the adjacent cell 13. The wall of the bulb socket is connected permanently to the contact ring 7 by a conductor 6. The battery may be depolarised by inserting prods or the like, connected to the terminals of a D.C. source, through a pair of openings 22 in the barrel, the upper opening giving access to a downwardly flanged metal disc 8 retained in position by the terminal nut 10 which connects it to the positive pole 14 of the cell; Specifications 569,352 and 595,121, [Group XI], are referred to.
