Abstract

338,581. Townsend, L. W. E., and Richmond, A. July 23,1929. Motor spirit is prepared by adding an antidetonating ingredient prepared from shale oil to paraffin hydrocarbons or distillates from petroleum, shale oil or coal tar, which may be mixed with higher boiling hydrocarbons of the same origin and not normally suitable as motor spirit. High boiling shale oil is cracked and yields a liquid product which separates into an upper layer of unchanged oil and a lower layer of tar. The tar is dehydrated at 120‹ C., preferably in a current, of inert gas, such as carbon dioxide, and is then distilled below 120‹ C. in an inert atmosphere, by reduction of pressure. Alternatively the tar may be distilled with wet steam below 120‹ C., and mav be dried with a dehydrating agent. Other anti-detonating agents may be added.
