Abstract
338,409. Associated Electrical Industries, Ltd., (Assignees of Yensen, T. D., and Ziegler, N. A.). Jan. 18, 1929, [Convention date]. Purifying and refining; annealing.-A process of obtaining iron, or alloys of iron with nickel or silicon, substantially free from carbon and oxygen, comprises adding to the material such an amount of either carbon or oxygen that these elements are present in substantially equal atomic proportions, and melting the material while simultaneously removing the products of combustion as they are formed, for example by evacuation or by passing an inert gas through the furnace. Carbon may be added as such; oxygen may be added as free oxygen, air, or an oxide of iron or of an alloying ingredient. The product may, be allowed to solidify in a vacuum, and may be cooled slowly from 900‹-1200‹ C. to normal temperature; or the slow cooling from 900-1200‹ C may follow mechanical working.
