Abstract

331,641. Wilson, D. May 16, 1929. Cam- and spring - actuated pumps; regulating delivery by by-passes and by opening suction valves. - Apparatus for supplying fuel to internal-combustion engines with airless injection comprises a pump plunger C reciprocated in a chamber d<3> by a cam e and surrounded by an annular accumulator plunger D which is moved forward by a spring e<4> arranged between flanges e<3>, d<1> on the two plungers. The chamber d<3> communicates by passages d', a' with a chamber a below the piston I of the injection valve i<1>, and by passages d<4>, d<5>, d<6>, a9, a<10>, as with a chamber above the piston I, so that the piston is balanced until a valve c<3>, c<4>, carried by the plunger C closes the passage d<6> and opens a passage c<6> leading to the inlet passage f<1>. A rise e<6> on the cam imparts a quick movement to the plunger near the end of the stroke. The pressure above the piston I is thereby quickly released, enabling the unbalanced pressure on the lower end to open the valve i<1>. The plunger D, which had been forced back against the spring e<4> by the pressure created in the chamber d' during the forward stroke of the plunger C, is returned by the spring to deliver the fuel through the passage a<7>and valve i<1> to the engine. The amount delivered is regulated by keeping the suction valve F open during a variable portion of the forward stroke of the plunger C by means of mechanism g, g<1>, f<5> operated by the plunger and adjusted by a governor-controlled fulcrum g<8> for the lever g. In another form, the end of the plunger C works in a separate chamber, and during the forward stroke of the plunger the fuel passes from this chamber through passages in the plunger to the chamber d<3>, where it forces back the piston D as before. The delivery is regulated by a by-pass valve connecting the chamber d<3> to the inlet side of the pump and operated by governor-controlled mechanism actuated by the plunger. In 'another form, the delivery is regulated by a peripheral chamber in the plunger D provided with an inclined edge and open to the chamber d<3> through a groove in the plunger. A by-pass port opens into the peripheral chamber, and the plunger D is rotatable to vary the moment in the stroke of the plunger at which the chamber communicates with the by-pass. In another form, the delivery is regulated by an axially adjustable sleeve . surrounding the piston D and provided with a by-pass port opening into a peripheral chamber in the piston. In another form, the end of the plunger D is inclined and the plunger may be rotated to vary the amount of closing of the delivery port.
