Feeding webs. - In a web - controlling mechanism comprising friction devices adapted to engage the roll surface, auxiliary friction devices which are normally out of operative relationship with the roll are adapted for supplying compensating pressure to the surface as the diameter of the roll decreases in unwinding. In the construction shown, a running web roll R and a spare web roll S are supported in arms 1 of a rotary roll support. The unwinding web W is controlled by three narrow belts 8 engaging the roll surface, these belts being attached at one end to a rod 13 mounted in lever arms 14 pivoted on a shaft 15, the other arms 16 of the levers being connected to a spring; the belts pass around guide rollers 20, 11 and have weights 12 secured to their free ends. A decrease in size of the roll decrease the area of contact of these belts and hence the braking pressure decreases. By rotating the roll support about a pivot 5, three auxiliary belts 17 are brought into contact with the belts 8 to provide additional pressure on the roll surface. These auxiliary belts also pass over the roller 11 and are provided with weights 21 at their free ends. In a modification, only two auxiliary belts are brought into operation and these bear on the roll surface itself.
