Materials for purifying.-The waste gases passing from a destructive hydrogenation after removal of condensible products therefrom are purified under the pressure of the reaction by treating them with agents taking up hydrogen sulphide for such a period of time that the purified gases contain less than 0.3 per cent of hydrogen sulphide by volume, and may be returned to the reaction. Solid or liquid absorption or adsorption agents may be used, e.g. water, oils, cyclohexane, hydrogenated naphthalene, pentanol, butanol, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, benzene, chlorobenzene, oil fractions obtained by destructive hydrogenation and boiling between 180-350‹ C., alkalies, ammonia, ferric hydroxide. Several absorption agents may be used in series or the agent may be allowed to act for a long time. An agent having a high rate of absorption may be followed by one having a slower rate, e.g. a silica gel having large pores followed by a silica gel having small pores. The liquid solvents may be regenerated by passing gases through them. Specifications 296,429 and 302,629, [both in Class 32, Distilling &c], are referred to.
