1,203,508. Purifying HCN. DEUTSCHE GOLD - UND SILBER - SCHEIDEANSTALT. 1 Oct., 1968 [3 Oct., 1967; 23 Feb., 1968], No. 46492/68. Heading C1A. Hydrogen cyanide is purified of benzene by washing at 20-50‹ C. with one or more highboiling hydrocarbons whose vapour pressure is at most 1.0 Torr at the working temperature, after which HCN is removed from the liquid by heating to 60-200‹ C., and benzene removed from the liquid by blowing off at 60- 250‹ C. Preferably the benzene absorption is carried out at room temperature. The hydrocarbon is preferably an alkylated benzene, e.g. decyl benzene, isodecyl benzene, undecyl benzene or dodecyl benzene, or hexa- or octadecane or mixtures thereof, or mineral oil fractions boiling above 150‹ C. The blowing out may be carried out using steam, N 2 or CO 2 , or a stream of already-purified HCN may be used. The HCN may be returned for re-purification to the absorption column after benzene has been absorbed in a quantity of 85-95% of the original amount. Preferably in the washing stage 1 m.<SP>3</SP> of solvent is used per 100 kg. of solvent.
