Abstract

329,038. Holworthy, H. F., and Slade, A. Feb. 16, 1929. Driving-arrangements for screw propellers.- Manually-actuated screw propeller arrangements include a disconnectible flywheel geared so as to be rotated at least ten times as fast as the propeller. Integral with oscillating levers A are quadrants A' which are connected by wires to one end of chains A<2> which pass round sprockets A<3> mounted on free wheels on a vertical shaft B. The chains are looped round a pulley J held bv tensioning springs J<2>. At the top of the shaft B is a large pinion B' which gears with a small pinion C' on the flywheel D. Bevels B<2>, E<3> may be clutched on the shaft B and gear with a bevel E' on the propeller shaft E whereby forward, neutral and reverse running is obtained. The gearing is in a, casing which forms a seat for the operator. In a modification according to the Provisional Specification the flynvheel may be geared to a pump in a hydraulic transmission system and the propeller shaft coupled to a motor therein.
