326,506. Payne, T. H., Thorburn, J. W., Norris, W. H. G., Cadel, C. S., and Sewell, V. C. Dec. 14, 1928. No. Patent granted (Sealing fee not paid). Detachable installat i o n s . - Outboard motor installation is driven through rightangled gearing, one component of which is arranged on an axis at right-angles to the centre line of the boat and the vertical shaft is mounted in a casing pivoted at its upper end about this axis for permitting tilting thereof when the propeller boss strikes an obstruction. The engine shaft extends from inboard' through the supporting bracket and carries a driving bevel 15 which engages an intermediate gear 11 on a transverse axis, the upper portion of the casing 6 which carries the propeller is pivotally supported about that transverse axis. When a reverse, gear is incorporated the driving shaft 18 carries free bevels 19, 20, meshing with a bevel 16 on the shaft of which is another bevel 17 which gears with the bevel wheel 13 on the vertical transmission shaft. The sliding dog clutch 21 provides, for forward, reverse and neutral running. In place of bevel gearing helical spur wheels may be used for the drive. When the motor is mounted on the outboard bracket on the transverse axis of swing a plain bevel wheel may be used directly to drive the bevel 13, the engine and fittings swinging as a unit about the pivotal axis.
