Refrigerating, absorption machines for. - In continuous-cycle systems containing inert gas in the evaporator 10 and absorber 11, heat exchangers are provided between different parts of the gas system so that counterflow of the media in a vertical evaporator may be effected without the aid of heat or mechanical circulating means. The conduit 13 leading the relatively pure inert gas, e.g. hydrogen, from the absorber first extends above the evaporator level, to provide a static head of gas tending to prevent flow of gas towards the top of the absorber, and then extends downwardly at 15 where it is cooled by upwardly flowing mixture of nert gas and refrigerant in a pipe 18 leading from the evaporator. At starting, the static head of inert gas causes the gas mixture to flow out of the top of the evaporator by pipe 16, and the mixture may first cool liquefied refrigerant flowing through a pipe 9 from the condenser 7, 8 to the top of the evaporator. After flowing upwardly through pipe 18 the gas mixture flows downwardly througn a pipe 19, which may be arranged to exchange heat with the inert gas pipe 13 so as to cool the upflowing inert gas, and then enters the bottom of the absorber. Surplus liquid from the evaporator may be led through a pipe 20 and seal 21 either to the liquid space of the absorber, or through a coil passing around the absorber to cool it by evaporation, and a drain pipe 22 may extend from the inert gas pipe 15 to the liquid seal 21. The apparatus includes a rectifier 4 cooled by liquid refrigerant, liquor heat exchanger 24 and thermal pump 3 of known forms.
