Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. - Packing for propeller shaft or like bearings comprises a rubber sleeve a, the elasticity of which causes it to grip the shaft b so as to rotate therewith, and a washer d engaging and rotating with the sleeve, the washer being pressed by the resiliency of the sleeve into contact with the end face of the bearing bush f. The outer end of the sleeve a abuts against the propeller hub c, the washer d being cup-shaped to extend over and protect, the sleeve. The washer may be solid or split, the two parts being secured together by bolts. As shown in Fig. 4, a washer is arranged at each end of the sleeve, the outer washer rubbing against a cover j adjustably secured to the bearing. The ends of the sleeve, which may be split, are tapered to fit into the washers.
