Purifying mineral oils.-In an apparatus for washing oils with acids, alkalies, &c., of the kind comprising a series of pairs of mixing and separating vessels through which the liquids flow in counter current, means are provided for regulating the proportions of the liquids in each pair of vessels independently of the rate of supply of the liquids to the plant. In the illustrated modification each mixing vessel a is connected by a pipe d with the corresponding separating vessel b and a second pipe e is provided whereby a portion of the heavier liquid is returned to the mixing vessel a, while the remainder of the heavier liquid and the lighter liquid flow to the preceding and succeeding mixing vessels respectively. Solid matter is removed from the interface of the liquids by a member m rotating in the plane of the interface, through which solid matter is withdrawn by way of a pipe p to a settling chamber q. The mixing vessel is provided with an agitator comprising an eccentrically situated vertical spindle h carrying rotating blades i.
