Abstract

320,915. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). April 27, 1928, Gelatine. - Water-soluble artificial resins, which are useful as plasticizing agents for gelatine, are prepared by heating a methylol compound of urea and/or thiourea, or a crystalline etheric derivative thereof obtainable according to Specifications 266,752 and 296,361, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], or a polymer of dimethylol-urea or thiourea produced by splitting off water by means of alkaline agents, in at least an equimolecular quantity of a polyhydric alcohol oran ether thereof containing at least two free hydroxyl groups. The polyhydric alcchol or ether not only acts as a solvent, but also takes. part in the reaction. According to the examples, (1) a suspension of dimethylolurea. in giycerol is. heated with acid potassium oxalate or a mixture of primary and secondary sodium phosphate until dissolution occurs; after neutralization and filtration, a viscous product is obtained which can be used as a plasticizer for gelatine; a similar product is prepared by heating monomethylolurea, suspended in glycerol, with oxalic acid and neutralizing with tertiary sodium phosphate.
