Abstract
In the production of tetrasubstituted ureas by the interaction of carbonyl chloride with a secondary amine in a solvent, an agent, such as a tertiary amine, is added to fix the hydrochloric acid liberated. According to the example, a mixture of monomethylaniline and dimethylaniline, such as results for example from the methylation of aniline, is dissolved in benzene and carbonyl chloride passed into the heated solution; after the benzene has been distilled off, the excess of dimethylaniline, which formed the acid-fixing agent, is removed by adding dilute hydrochloric acid and the dimethyldiphenylurea filtered off.
