320,523. Caxton Machinery Co., Ltd., and Pullan, S. W. Oct. 13, 1928. Cylinder machines; impression adjustments.-A proof press of the kind in which the type forme or galley is laid on a bed 1, and the impression is taken by a travelling cylinder 3, is constructed to maintain a constant meshing depth between gears 12 on the cylinder and the racks 11 on the bed. Bearer rings 14 on the cylinder engage bearer tracks 13 carried by spring-pressed bars 10 which also support the racks 11. The axles 4 of the cylinder 3 are mounted in bearings vertically adjustable by screws 16 in a carriage 7 fitted with rollers 23 engaging tracks 22 on the underside of the bed 1, and when the cylinder is moved vertically the bars 10 are moved to the same extent and the bearers 13 and racks 11 maintain the same relative position with respect to the cylinder 3. The screws 16 are operated simultaneously to an equal extent by means of sprockets 17 and a chain 18. Spring buffers 27 limit the movement of the carriage 7.
