Abstract
319,742. Gronborg, P. N. Sept. 27, 1928, [Convention date]. Pasteurizing milk, beer, &c. - A pasteurizing- apparatus for treating, for example, milk, beer or other liquids in bottles or other containers comprises a series of chambers 1-10, Fig. 1, in which the bottles &c. to be treated are brought up to and kept at the pasteurizing temperature by displacement or circulation of water in the chambers, a distributer being provided by which a pump I provided with a heating device can be connected successively with one or more of the chambers so as to withdraw water therefrom and return it to another or others of the chambers after it has been heated sufficiently to maintain the pasteurization temperature in the pasteurization zone. A second pump II can be connected to the chambers successively in pairs to provide a quiet circulation of water through the system. In the construction shown, the pump I is connected through pipes o, p to a valve g rotating in a casing f to which each of the chambers 1-10 is connected by a pipe e<1> - - e<10>. The chambers are separated by walls c having valves d and the and chambers 1, 10 are connected by a pipe b. Water is drawn by the pump I from chambers 2, 4 through pipes e<2>, e<4> and passage h in valve g, connected to the pump through pipe o. The water, after passing, through the pump I, is heated bv addition of steam through a pipe C and a valve B controlled by a temperature-regulating device D, E, the heated water passing through pipe p, passage k in valve g and pipe e<3> to chamber 3 from which the circulation is continued through chambers 2, 4 back to the pump. The valve d between chambers 7, 8 is meanwhile kept closed and a quiet circulation of cooling water through the chamber is obtained by pump II which draws water from chamber 7 through pipe e', passage m in valve g and pipe g which has a pipe L through which excess water is withdrawn. Cold water is added through a pipe F and valve G to the water which passes from the pump II through a pipe r, a valve H, a passage n in valve g, and pipe e<9> to chamber 9 from which it circulates again through the chambers to chamber 7. The cold water supply may be connected so as to operate only when the pump is in use.. Cooling may alternatively be effected by providing a device which cools the water passing through the system. The pump II is preferably combined with a gear which stops it after a time, e.g. 5 minutes, corresponding to the required displacement of water, which is preferably somewhat greater than the contents of one chamber. The stopping means is preferably also employed to rotate the valve g through <1>/10 of a revolution, thus displacing the operations forward by one chamber. The valve between chambers 7, 8 is then opened and the next valve is shut, the operation being manual or automatic. The bottles &c. in the chamber opposite the hottest chamber are now pasteurized and are removed and replaced by unpasteurized bottles. In starting from the cold, by opening a valve K in a pipe J two further chambers 7, 9 are connected to the pump I, the valve being closed when the correct temperatures are obtained in the apparatus. The partitions c between the chambers may each consist of a double wall, Figs. 2, 3, one portion of which has its lower end above the bottom of the chambers and its upper end above the top of the other portion. Between the walls is disposed a valve in the form of a plate shaving perforations s<1>, and a similar plate t with perforations t<1> which can be displaced longitudinally on plate s by a lever u pivoted at v on the pasteurizing apparatus a. The lever u has an adjustable projection x which is pressed, by a weight y, on a cam z on a shaft z<1> extending along the apparatus.
