Abstract
329,193. Melballe, T. June 7, 1929. Preserving milk.-Milk is pasteurized by passage through pipe coils 3, 5 surrounded by jackets 4, 6 through which is circulated in opposite direction to the milk a heating liquid from and to a heating tank 14, the temperature in the coils being regulated by co-operating thermostatic devices one 23 disposed in the pipe system and the. other 25 in the tank 14. In the construction described, the milk is fed by gravity from a tank 1 in which a constant level is maintained by supply from a tank 29 through float valve 30. The milk passes through pipe 2 to a preheating coil 3 and thence to the pasteurizing coil 5. The milk is finally cooled to normal temperature in a coil 7 having a jacket 8 through which cooling water is passed, entering by pipe 12 and leaving by pipe 13. Valves 9, 10 allow the milk flow to be regulated. The heating liquid, e.g. water or oil, in tank 14 may be heated by steam supplied through a pipe 13 and diffuser 20 through a valve 26 controlled by the thermostatic devices 23, 25, and passes from the tank through pipe 15, pump 16, valve 27 and pipe 17 to jacket 6, returning from jacket 4 through pipe 18. A byepass 28 is provided through which the hot liquid can be supplied directly to jacket 4 at the beginning of the process, the flow being regulated by valve 27. Tank 14 is connected through a pipe 21 with a relief tank 29 and a discharge pipe 22 to allow for expansion. The heating liquid may be passed through the pipe coils at a greater speed than the milk to prevent too great a drop in temperature.
