Abstract

Reversing-gearing comprises wheels and oneway clutches arranged so that a shaft is driven in the same direction whichever way the driving shaft rotates. In Fig. 2 are shown two spur trains 3, 4 and 2, 7, 5 connecting shafts 1, 6 so as to drive in opposite directions. Other trains such as bevel or spiral might be used. The automatic direction-changing device may comprise a staggered double-ended bolt or pawl 24, Figs. 6 and 8, which slides through the driving or driven shaft 1. The dog ends 25 of this pawl engage the flat ends of ramps 21, 22 inside the bosses of the wheels 2, 3. Each ramp comprises a complete turn of a helix. The clutch drive is positive. A clutch pawl 29, Fig. 9, may slide axially, or may be inclined to the shaft axis. This pawl may be elastic. Pivoted pawl devices may be rocked by the single helix ramps instead of slid. Separate spring dogs may be used, one for each ramp.
