Radiations, treating substances with.-An irradiation apparatus comprises an electric discharge tube and a container 3 which are detachably secured to a casing 1. The discharge tube contains mercury vapour, to which a gas such as argon may be added, and comprises an incandescent cathode 4 and two anodes 5, 6 separated bv a screen. The discharge tube is held e.g. in a four-pole bavonet holder 10 secured to the casing 1. Rubber and copper rings and a screw cap 17 are employed to ensure a tight joint between the vessel 3 and the flange 14 of the discharge tube. The casing 1 is connected to a side extension 22 secured to a wall plate 23. The supply wires 26 are led through an aperture in the extension 22.
