Abstract

Rolling.-A method of producing plate glass in a continuous strip consists in making the glass in a pot furnace, pouring the contents of each pot successively into a heated container which maintains the glass therein at the proper temperature for rolling, and in flowing the glass continuously from the container into a rolling machine, each pot being poured into the' container before the whole contents of the preceding pot has flowed into the rolling machine. The apparatus comprises a pot furnace 1 of known type, a container 2, a rolling apparatus 3, and a leer 4 of the roller-conveyer type. The container 2 consists of a small tank furnace heated by burners 8 and provided in one wall with a horizontal slot 7 through which the glass flows into the pass between the rollers 3. The floor 5 of the furnace is inclined towards the slot 7 and is extended outside the furnace to form a pouring or receiving table 6. The floor may also be wormed with a recess 9. In a modification, a part of the floor near the outlet slot may be horizontal. The dimensions of the container are such that it will hold more than the contents of one pot but less than the contents of two.
