317,193. Cowell, A. G. July 6, 1928. Pile fabrics. -Tufted or pile fabrics are woven with double the normal number of tufts in the width. The design is drafted on paper having double the normal number of divisions in the width and each line is set so that the tuft yarns of alternate divisions are wound on tuft tube bobbins of one frame and the remainder on bobbins' of a second frame, the frames and bobbins being mounted alternately in the carrying chains and operated so that tufts from alternate frames are inserted in alternate spaces between warp threads. The frame or cradle to which the frames are transferred, and by operation of which the tuft yarns are inserted in the warp, receives a slight lateral motion periodically in addition to its rise and fall. In a modification, the cradle is dispensed with, the tuft tubes on the two frames being out of line with each other. For reading-in the design, a comb, Fig. 2, is employed having seven teeth and seven equal spaces to the inch. One line is readin from the visible parts of the paper, and the comb is then shifted to cover these and disclose the remaining spaces from which the next line is read-in. In a further modification, each bobbin, Fig. 13, may have two rows of tubes t, t', relatively staggered, the design being then read-in straight across the line. Figs. 1 and 3 - - 10 indicate the mode of weaving. The sley and comb have each 14 dents to the inch. Alternatively, two adjacent combs having each seven teeth may be used, the combs being relatively staggered.
