317,137. Gower, C. H. R., and Stafford O'Brien & Partners, Ltd. May 15, 1928. Chromium, depositing; treatment after electro. lysis.-In the electrodeposition of chromium an anode of aluminium is employed. The anode may be in the form of a plate, casting, grid or cage of aluminium or may comprise a cage or other hollow perforated body of conducting material containing granulated, powdered or broken aluminium. The electrolyte may consist of a solution of chromium sesquioxide but is preferably a solution of chromic acid of strength 25-30‹ BÚ. The starting voltage is 6 and is lowered to 3-4 after two or three minutes. The aluminium requires deoxidizing after a period of working. In the case of a plate, grid or the like this is effected by washing, dipping in a 20 per cent solution of sodium hydrate for a few minutes, brushing and again washing. Powdered aluminium when employed is renewed when necessary.
